About the IAF

Commander of Air Defense Corps

The AA (anti-aircraft) array job, together with the IAF’s aircrafts, is to protect Israel’s sky from the incursion of hostile aircrafts.

Short History

The beginning was modest. Just before the establishment of the state of Israel, the first Hispano-Suiza 20mm cannons were brought up. The Swiss cannons arrived on a freighter, hidden between potato sacks.

Covered as a normal factory, the AA School established in Herzliyah. The instructors were Israelis who served in the British army in WW2. The cadets were high-school students, immigrants and Holocaust survivors. They went through five training days, and sent to take part in the Jordan Valley battles.

The cannons were activated against ground targets, but also protected Tel-Aviv, and even shot down an Egyptian plane who attacked Sde-Dov air-base.
In January 1950 the AA headquarters was established, head by Col. Boris Senior, and was subordinated directly to the Deputy Chief of the General Staff. At the end of 1950 the AA headquarters was dismantled and its units were reassigned to other positions in the IAF, but were subordinated to the artillery corps.

In 1951 two more regiments were added to the AA, and in 1953 another regiment was established and had new radar guided cannons. At the same time, reserve regiments and control units were established.

In the beginning of the 60’s the argument on the AA’s corps subordination increased, and when the purchase of the Hawk Missiles has been settled, the IAF commander at the time, Ezer Weizmann, claimed that only the IAF is capable of answering the complex needs of the missile operation.

The cooperation between the IAF and the artillery corps became more and more tightened, and thus for the professional specialization of the AA soldiers, until December 1st 1970 when the AA joined the IAF, and in February 1971 the organization of the array was completed and a professional AA headquarters was established, headed by Col. Moshe Tamir. The new array shot down 15 Egyptian aircrafts during the War of Attrition.
During that period the AA used 40 mm cannons, which arrived back in 1963. Mobile regiments of the AA also had a major role in the War of Attrition as infantry force.

Yom Kippur War best tested the true capabilities of the array, which proved to be satisfactory: 34 Egyptian aircrafts and seven Syrian aircrafts were shot down by the AA array.

In the end of the war Chaparral missiles, Vulcan cannons and Red-eye missiles were purchased and immediately used in operational missions. In addition, expropriated systems entered the array: 23 mm cannons and SA-7 missiles.

During Lebanon War the AA forces moved along with the IDF divisions, and defended them from aerial threats. Vulcan force shot down a MiG-21 in the course of a stubborn ground battle with a terrorist militia. Hawk battery placed in the Lebanon shot down a Syrian MiG-25, and Red-eye missile that was fired by reserve regiment, shot down another Syrian aircraft.

Ever since Lebanon War the AA forces have a major role in the protection of northern Israel, in tight cooperation with the ground forces.

The AA was significantly reinforced when the Patriot batteries entered the array.

The AA array also operates today the “Hetz” (Arrow) battery, for the interception of ground-to-ground missiles. In the future, the AA will operate more advanced “Hetz” batteries
